Arctic answers the storage question with a bigger number. Arctic's official FAQ rates its resealable syringes at up to 8 years unopened, and tells owners to replace applied paste when they notice changes in temperature, noise, or performance rather than on any calendar date.

Once a tube is open, the clock speeds up. Noctua's support FAQ, updated in April 2025, puts an opened NT-H1 or NT-H2 tube at up to 2 years, provided the cap goes back on and the tube stays away from heat and direct sunlight.

The brands do not even agree with themselves. The printed manual packed with Arctic MX-4 states 3 years unopened and 24 months after opening, far more conservative than the 8-year figure on Arctic's own website.

1. Power down and unplug

Shut the machine off, unplug it, and press the power button once to drain residual charge before touching anything inside.

3. Clean both surfaces

Wipe the chip lid and the cooler plate with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth until both come away clean.
